USDA PLANS TO OUTSOURCE BIOTECH STUDIES

Proponent of reform says third-party labs could be faster, better stand up in court

The USDA plans to experiment with a new way of evaluating biotech crops for potential commercialization.

Under the agency’s new two-year pilot project, biotech developers would conduct their own environmental assessment of transgenic crops or pay contractors to perform the analysis.

Currently, officials at USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service are responsible for the studies.

Federal environmental law requires the agency to complete such reviews before deregulating biotech crops.

Buried deep in the Wikileaks files is the U.S. government's objective to steer many African countries toward the use of genetically modified agriculture.

In a document outlining priorities for intelligence gathering in Burundi, Rwanda, the Republic of Congo and others in the region, one objective is "Government acceptance of genetically modified food and propagation of genetically modified crops."

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved plantings of three genetically engineered (GE) crops in as many weeks, including Monsanto Co.’s Roundup Ready sugar beets and alfalfa that are engineered to tolerate Roundup Ready weed-killing herbicide.

The USDA on February 11 also legalized, without restriction, the world’s first GE corn crop meant for biofuel production. Biotech giant Syngenta’s Event 3272 seed corn will simplify ethanol production and is not meant to feed animals or humans.

MONSANTO SUGAR BEETS: U.S. OKS PLANTING OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED SUGAR BEETS DESPITE COURT BAN

Move comes after USDA estimates of a sugar shortage. Regulators place some restrictions on the plantings pending a court-ordered review. Opponents say they’ll go to court again to try to stop the action.

Despite a court ban, federal regulators said Friday that farmers would be able to plant genetically modified sugar beets this year — though such plantings would have to happen under certain conditions while the government finishes up a full environmental impact statement.
