Canada's Transgenic Enviropig Is Stuck In A Genetic Modification Poke

Genetically Engineered Animals

The small herd of pigs in a research barn in Guelph look like ordinary pigs.

They act like ordinary pigs, and presumably, they would even taste like ordinary pigs if anyone dared to break the law and sample one.

But these are Enviropigs. The transgenic creations of university researchers, they are the world's most controversial environmentally sensitive swine, and they're not legally fit to eat. At least, not yet.

TAIWAN CREATES BREEDING FLUORESCENT FISH

Genetically Engineered Animals

The most recently created fluorescent fish are angelfish - the biggest and brightest transgenic glowing fish in the world so far.

Taiwan’s largest exporter of ornamental fish, the Jy Lin Company, says it has successfully inserted a fluorescent protein gene into the reproductive organs of the fish. It allows them to produce glowing offspring.

The company says its new breed of fish took more than three years and approximately 10 million Taiwan dollars to develop because the reproductive cycles of medium-sized fish are harder to control than their small-sized counterparts.

DUTCH GROUP TO SELL GM ANIMAL DRUG

The first European company to produce a drug from a genetically modified animal is to begin distributing its treatment to patients in the coming weeks.

Pharming, based in the Netherlands, is set to be the world’s first pharmaceutical group to derive a medicine from transgenic rabbits, using the milk they produce as the basis for its drug to treat a rare genetic disease.

IF GENETICALLY MODIFIED SALMON IS OK’D, CAN ENVIROPIG BE FAR BEHIND?

Genetically Engineered Animals

GUELPH - Enviropig meets Frankensalmon on a butcher-shop counter near you. It is a likely scenario.

The Guelph co-inventor of the patented Enviropig - a genetically modified variation on the common Yorkshire pig that produces cleaner excrement - is closely watching the case of the AquaAdvantage Salmon, which critics have derogatively nicknamed Frankensalmon.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is weighing whether to allow a genetically engineered Atlantic salmon to be the first such animal to be sold as food. The following are four other genetically engineered animals in development or approved by the FDA.
