Soybeans, corn, cotton and canola - most of the acres planted in these crops in the United States are genetically altered. "Transgenic" seeds can save farmers time and reduce the use of some insecticides, but herbicide use is higher, and respected experts argue that some genetically engineered crops may also pose serious health and environmental risks. Also, the benefits of genetically engineered crops may be overstated.

The rapid rise of genetically modified organisms, labeled as a tool to achieve food security, raises ”a profound set of ethical issues surrounding the professional functioning of geneticists and academic and industry biologists,” Bereano said.

Philip Bereano, professor emeritus at the University of Washington in Seattle, has been an active and outspoken proponent of democratic social ethics in biotechnology. He is a participant in the United Nations’ Codex Alimentarius processes and co-founder of the Council for Responsible Genetics.
