Producers of plant-made pharmaceuticals do not have an easy row to hoe.

"There are regulations and safety issues that have created complications for people to break into that market," says Stephen Howell, director of the Plant Sciences Institute at Iowa State University in Ames. "There are a lot of companies that got started in that area then backed off."

WASHINGTON - Ventria Bioscience is giving up plans to grow genetically modified rice in Missouri this year, saying the company can't get a permit from federal regulators in time for the growing season.
